1. What are the requirements for being a foster parent?
- You may be single, married, partnered, divorced or widowed to become a foster parent
- Age 21+
- You already have children or have none
- You are financially stable
- You have the ability to parent a child
- You may either rent or own your own home. However, the living quarters must be large enough to provide adequate space. It must comply with state regulations, which will be discussed in your home study.
- Your home needs to meet safety requirements and standards
2. What does it cost?
There is a cost for fingerprints, around $50. This fee is reimbursed once you have completed the certification and home study process, and your first child(ren) are placed. You will receive a monthly stipend for the child(ren) placed in your home.
3. How long does the process take?
Depends, once your paperwork and classes have been completed, your certification and home study process can take 60 days.
4. What is a home study?
A home study is an important requirement of the foster care .A social worker will meet with your family to provide information about the process and other important background information. The social worker then prepares a written family profile, with background history, current relationships and functioning, experience with children and parenting as well as other pertinent information.
5. Do I add the child(ren) to my medical coverage?
Children in foster care are covered by Medi-Cal .
6. What are some of the most important qualities for being a foster parent?
You need to be a good communicator and problem solver: accept and understand feelings – both you and the child’s. You need to have the ability to support the physical and emotional needs of a child in crisis.
7. Who are the children in foster care?
Positive Option Family Service has children of all ages, from infants to older adolescents. We have children from all ethnic and economic backgrounds.
8. Is there any contact with the child’s parents?
Yes. Children need to remain in touch with their families, since the goal in most cases is for the children to return home. However, your involvement is determined on an individual case by case basis.
9. How long do children stay in foster care?
Each child’s case is unique. Children can stay between 1 day to 10 years.
10.Can I decide the age or gender of a child?
Yes. You and your assigned social worker will decide together which children will be placed in your home. They will help provide the best match for your family.
11. Are there support services available?
Absolutely! You will have access to many services to assist your current issues. Your social worker will help you with finding the proper support.
